Whenever I see on my calendar a holiday weekend approaching, I get a little anxious. I’m not gonna lie, I really don’t like how almost every single holiday revolves around food. It’s hard to be around friends and family AND all of the food temptations and not go overboard. Who hasn’t been guilty of standing over the bowl of chips and salsa and mindlessly chowing down without even realizing what you’re doing?! Or eating a huge slice (or two) of your Mom’s famous homemade chocolate cake with peanut butter icing?
That’s why my goal for this upcoming Memorial Day Holiday Weekend is to stay on track while also allowing myself some indulgences. I think we often forget that the holiday is only ONE DAY, not an entire week or weekend! Below are five tips that I’m planning on doing to stay on track this weekend:
Start your day with a good healthy breakfast: If you don’t, you will tend to overeat the rest of the day. For me that means that even when we travel, I always take my Shakeology along with me to start my day on the right foot.
Water, water, water: Stay hydrated! Not only will this help you get through a hot barbecue party but it will also help you stay full. Drinking a full glass of water before every meal will help you fill up faster.
Get your workout in: A holiday isn’t the day to skip your workout or take a rest day. Not only will this help you feel better and keep your focus on your health, but it will also help to speed up your metabolism. And don’t just do it alone—grab your family and go for a walk or a bike ride together.
Eat slowly: I know all of the moms out there can relate to this. The habit that is created when your kids are younger and less patient while you’re eating is to just scarf your food down as fast as you can. But I want to encourage you to eat slower and actually taste your food. It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to recognize how much is in your stomach. It is a good idea to take a break after you eat to lessen the temptation to go for another serving! And while you are at it, drink another glass of water with your meal!!
Smart Treating: Go into your party or social gathering with a general idea of where you are going to have your treat. Choose the foods that are worth it to you and the ones that you could really live without. Fill up on the good stuff first, then indulge in your chosen treat. And don’t look at this as a “cheat” that you need to beat yourself up about—instead it is your chosen treat! This will make you feel less deprived and guilty when you wake up the next day.
An additional tip is to eat healthy the entire day (or weekend) leading up to the party too. Above all else, remember why you are there! Are you truly there to indulge in food that technically you could have any day of the week or are you there to spend time with the people you love? Focus on the people not your plate!
